6 Things I've Learned From a Successful Blogger (And How I've Applied Them)

About a month ago I took part in a free CreativeLive workshop Build a Successful Creative Blog taught by April Bowles-Olin of Blacksburg Belle. Some of us who attended decided to create a blog tour, highlighting our biggest takeaways. If you want to learn how to improve your blog (or start a new one) definitely read this post, and the other posts in the series. Read more...

Welcome to my studio! This is where the magic happens

Welcome to my studio! This is where the magic happens

For years I've been living in apartments with no room for a proper studio. I've been creating on kitchen tables, balconies, beds and even floors. All my art & craft supplies had to fit in two drawers. I tried to make the best of what I had. Now I have a wonderful dedicated room just for my creative work. It's an office and an art studio in one. I have plenty of room for creating, and enough storage space for all the art supplies and tools I own. I absolutely love spending my days here. Read more...

Maybe you're not meant to be a specialist

Maybe you're not meant to be a specialist

We've been called unfocused, irresponsible, flaky, Jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none and a gazzillion other things, mostly negative. Occasionally someone might call us a Renaissance person or multi-talented (usually people who are themselves multi-passionate, so they see the benefit), but in general we have a really bad rep in the world of specialization. The Fool's leap

The Fool's leap

They say even a kick in the rear is a step forward, and I tend to agree. As of September 1st I no longer have a day job, and it's just the kick in the right direction I needed. How perfectionism is ruining my chances of accomplishing anything

How perfectionism is ruining my chances of accomplishing anything

I've realized (not recently, but it keeps hitting me on the head often) that perfectionism is number 1 reason why my projects don't get done. When I want to make a project 100% on my own terms and the way I imagined it, and I realize it's not possible for me at this moment, I choose not to do it. I postpone it for some future time when I'll have all the resources I need to do this project properly. I just wanted to share this because I'm probably not the only one to feel this way. And because I'm trying to break the annoying myth of "Nela has everything figured out" that I just can't live up to. Read more...

2012 review and plans for 2013

I know, it's so tacky to write about this subject at this time of year. I usually make my review and planning around my birthday, and this October I still didn't have a blog. And it sucked, because I didn't like the review. Actually, not having my new website or blog done by my birthday is precisely what frustrated me so much, and pushed me to finally make it happen. Rethinking my online identity and personal brand

Rethinking my online identity and personal brand

For a long time I had a separate art portfolio on one domain, and commercial design work on the other. I did it because I wanted my portfolio to be more professional but after I while I realized that it was difficult to maintain. My two domains only illustrated what was evident in my life as well. I was leading a double life — being a proper designer with a day job, and in my free time I was as an independent artist with illustration aspirations. Finally I decided it was time for change...
