A small change in my branding

A small change in my branding

When I started my website, I wrote about my branding and how it came to be. I wanted NelaDunato.com to embody all my creative work and hobbies, so that people may see the entirety of who I am, and not just one facet. However the homepage image was bugging me a bit. The image I wanted to portray was 'I do all these different things, and I'm managing it well! No reason to specialize, you can trust me even though I claim I can do the job that normally takes 3 people to accomplish!' I'm not sure if that's what came through. All I know is that I did some heavy soul-searching in the past 6 months... Read more...

The Fool's leap

The Fool's leap

They say even a kick in the rear is a step forward, and I tend to agree. As of September 1st I no longer have a day job, and it's just the kick in the right direction I needed. If you're wondering how this came to be, read on. I could potentially sum it up in a paragraph, but where's the fun in that? Read more...

How perfectionism is ruining my chances of accomplishing anything

How perfectionism is ruining my chances of accomplishing anything

I've realized (not recently, but it keeps hitting me on the head often) that perfectionism is number 1 reason why my projects don't get done. And because I'm trying to break the annoying myth of "Nela has everything figured out" that I just can't live up to. Read more...

Why I still start all my design work on paper

Why I still start all my design work on paper

However in the beginning stages - logo brainstorming, website wireframes, illustration sketches, poster compositions - I prefer to work on paper. If you're wondering why I decided against getting a tablet PC at the moment, here are my reasons, accompanied by some rough behind-the-scenes sketches. Read more...

2012 review and plans for 2013

I know, it's so tacky to write about this subject at this time of year. I usually make my review and planning around my birthday, and this October I still didn't have a blog. And it sucked, because I didn't like the review. Actually, not having my new website or blog done by my birthday is precisely what frustrated me so much, and pushed me to finally make it happen. Rethinking my online identity and personal brand

Rethinking my online identity and personal brand

For a long time I had a separate art portfolio on one domain, and commercial design work on the other. I did it because I wanted my portfolio to be more professional but after I while I realized that it was difficult to maintain. My two domains only illustrated what was evident in my life as well. I was leading a double life — being a proper designer with a day job, and in my free time I was as an independent artist with illustration aspirations. Finally I decided it was time for change...
